Lying on the border of Souther Montgomery County, Maryland, Friendship Heights is a largely commercial neighborhood in DC’s Northwest quadrant. The borders of Friendship Heights are approximately 41st Street and Reno Road to the east, Fessenden Place to the south, and River Road and Western Avenue to the west and north. The neighborhood’s most substantial commercial venues are the large shopping plazas and malls near the intersection of Wisconsin and Western Avenues. These include a number of department stores, as well as day spas, boutiques, a multiplex cinema and many other services that cater to residents as well as visitors to the area.
Residential life in Friendship heights consists mainly of apartments and condominiums. Development has accelerated considerably since the late 1990s, such as the construction of Chase Tower on Willard Avenue, a new Chevy Chase Center replacing the older complex of that name of the 1980s, and new condos on the site of the former Washington Women’s Clinic.
