Eckington is a neighborhood in the Northeast quadrant of Washington, DC, less than a mile southeast of Howard University and exactly one mile north of the US Capitol. It is bounded by Washington Metro’s Brentwood Yard to the east, Rhode Island Avenue to the north, Florida Avenue to the south, and North Capitol Street to the west. Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood Station, located to the northeast, and NoMa-Gallaudet U Station, located to the South, provide Eckington with metro rail access.
Eckington is known as a tight-knit community consisting mainly of row houses and tree-lined streets. It was developed in the early 1900s when a street car line was extended to the area. This line was later removed and replaced with North Capitol Street, a sunken high-volume road that now divides Eckington from it’s neighboring community, Bloomingdale. Other adjacent communities include Edgewood, Brentwood, Near Northeast, NoMa, and Truxton Circle.
