Nestled in the heights of Washington, DC’s Northwest Quadrant, Barnaby Woods is situated between Rock Creek Park and Montgomery County, Maryland. It is bordered on the west by Western Avenue, on the south by Tennyson Street, on the east by Oregon Avenue, and on the north by Aberfoyle Place.
Considered one of Northwest’s more pristine neighborhoods, Barnaby Woods is a completely residential area with no commercial zoning whatsoever. Housing consists mainly of 1930s colonial homes on large parcels of land, although a few streets are made up solely of townhouses.
Edward R. Carr formed the Barnaby Woods Development Company in 1934 in order to develop the 23 acre tract in Chevy Chase, DC. Claude G. Johnson and M.B Swanson are also credited with the marketing and realization of this community. The engineer and landscape architect of the National Capital Park & Planning Commission, Thomas C. Jeffers, was employed to lay out the subdivision.
