American University Park (often abbreviated to AU Park) is a neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant of DC named for American University. The neighborhood sits along the Maryland border and is bounded by Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Western Avenues.
Developed in the 1920s by the WC and AN Miller Company, AU Park is made up almost exclusively of single-family homes in a wide variety of architectural styles. Numbering approximately 2700, most of the homes in AU Park have been modified or expanded since the 1930s. Although this area was one of DC’s first to be developed with automobile accessibility in mind, most of the homes are closely spaced, feature front porches or stoops, and often do not include driveways, which many say contributes to community spirit.
The neighborhoods of Tenleytown and Friendship Heights lie to the east of AU Park, Embassy Park sits to the southeast, and Spring Valley (the actual home of American University’s main campus) to the southwest. Small commercial areas are situated in AU Park along Wisconsin and Massachusetts Avenues.
