Adams Morgan is a culturally diverse neighborhood in DC’s northwest quadrant, centered along the intersection of 18th Street and Columbia Road. Adams Morgan is considered to be the center of Washington’s Hispanic community, and is a major night life area with many bars and restaurants, particularly along 18th Street (the primary commercial district) and Columbia Road. Much of the neighborhood is comprised of 19th- and early 20th-century townhouses and apartment buildings. Neighborhoods adjacent to Adams Morgan include Dupont Circle to the south, Kalorama-Sheridan to the southwest, Mount Pleasant to the north, and Columbia Heights to the east. It is bounded by Connecticut Avenue to the southwest, Rock Creek Park to the west, Harvard Street to the north, 16th Street to the east, and Florida Avenue to the south.
In the 1960s, the Adam’s Morgan’s attractions included the Avignon Freres bakery and restaurant (this closed in the 1990s), the Ontario motion picture theater, the Café Don restaurant, and the Showboat Lounge jazz nightclub. Hazel’s featured live blues and jazz in the 1980’s. Its soul food specialties made it a favorite of black jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie when they came to town. In September 2014, the American Planning Association named Adams Morgan one of the nation’s “great neighborhoods”, citing its intact Victorian row houses, murals, international diversity, and pedestrian- and cyclist friendly streetscape.
